OLLIE CELEBRATES THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL BASH WITH WHITE COUNTY

On August 8th, Ollie the Otter joined the White County Board of Education in celebrating the upcoming school year by holding a Back-to-School Bash for students of all ages throughout the county. Julie Brewer, Jonathan Aiken, and Jeff Graham were the volunteers present at the event.

A large crowd of parents and children attended the event, and it was a great opportunity to spread the message of seatbelt and booster seat safety. Lieutenant R. C. Christian from Tennessee Highway Patrol was on hand to distribute booster seats to eligible families.

“Ollie has presented to all of the White County elementary schools in the past year and it was an awesome experience to come out and celebrate the start of the new school year with them. It was great to have the children recognize Ollie and remember his message about booster seats and seatbelt safety.” Said Julie Brewer, volunteer from Tennessee Technological University’s Business Media Center.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2005, an average of five children, ages 14 and younger were killed and 640 were injured in motor vehicle crashes every day. The use of booster seats compared to the use of adult seatbelts alone lowers the risk of injury to children in crashes by 59 percent.

The event was very health and safety oriented, including booths with free vision and hearing screenings. Ollie distributed promotional and informational materials including bookmarks and newsletters to all who were in attendance.
